Classes & Workshops

Weekly Classes

Classes are held in Janet's home yoga studio on Ballard Street in Woodside, Silver Spring.  Classes are appropriate for beginners and experienced students of all ages.  Classes are gentle with a touch of challenge.

Monday   6:30 - 7:45 PM
Wednesday   6:00 - 7:15 PM
Thursday   6:45 - 8:00 PM

Classes are 75 minutes long. The fee for one class a week is $15, and $10 for subsequent classes in the same week .  Class size is generally 5-8 students. Contact Janet for more information and to join the class on a space available basis: janetsilva@me.com, or (301) 589-6749.

Special Workshops

  • Yoga Relax and Restore Class, first Friday of the Month, 7:00-9:00PM

The class will start with centering and slow stretches, progressing to quieter segments that include eye exercises, restorative poses, candle gazing, deep breathing and relaxation.  A restorative yoga practice relies heavily on the use of blankets, cushions and other props to help the body lengthen without effort and release tension. Typical supported restorative postures are:  simple back bends, twists, forward folds, hip openers, and/or legs up the wall.  Slow and deep breath work is an important part of the practice. This restorative experience is similar to conscious relaxation (savasana) at the end of a yoga class.  

Restorative yoga is especially helpful when you are experiencing physical limitations, jet lag, fatigue, high stress levels, grief, loss, or recuperation from an illness.  The practice helps to trigger the parasympathetic nervous system (the relaxation response) and is the antidote to the fight or flight reflex.  The parasympathetic nervous system helps to lower the heart rate and blood pressure, helps to stimulate the immune system and is generally beneficial for overall body health.  The supported postures will help you to relax tense shoulders, release tightness around the hips, and expand the chest cavity to make deep breathing easier.  The class is limited to 6 students, is 2 hours in length, and the fee is $30.00.  This is a popular workshop, if you are certain that you want to take this workshop, I suggest you pay for the class in advance to guarantee your place. The registration fee is not refundable.
